We are excited to announce our new partnership with The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF). The NWTF is a national nonprofit conservation and hunting organization; that along with its volunteers, partners and sponsors, works for the conservation of the wild turkey and preservation of the hunting tradition. When the NWTF was established in 1973, there were only 1.3 million wild turkeys. Today that number stands at more than seven million birds through North America, and hunting seasons have been established in 49 U.S. states, Canada and Mexico.
The NWTF was founded in Fredericksburg, VA by Tom Rogers and is now located in Edgefield, SC. Since its founding, the NWTF has expanded from 1,300 members to nearly 500,000. This 4th of July I decided to host an event that will help make a difference and help others. This Saturday, in honor of Independence Day I will be having a cookout that will benefit Cell Phones for Soldiers. Cell Phones for Soldiers turns old cell phones into prepaid calling cards for U.S. troops stationed overseas. To do so, Cell Phones for Soldiers collects phones and sends them to ReCellular, which pays Cell Phones for Soldiers with prepaid minutes. Each donated phone provides an hour of talk time for soldiers abroad.
Cell Phones for Soldiers was founded by two teenagers, Robbie and Brittany Bergquist, from Massachusetts with $21 of their own money. Since then, they have become a nonprofit organization that has raised almost $2 million in donations and has distributed more than 500,000 prepaid calling cards to soldiers serving overseas.
You can help Cell Phones for Soldiers by mailing in old cell phones, dropping off a cell phone at one of over 40,000 registered drop-off locations, or by donating money. Visit www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com for more information.
I have asked all those invited to my 4th of July cookout to bring in any old cell phones they may have around. In addition we will be playing a trivia game and all of the proceeds will be donated to Cell Phones for Soldiers.
