MegaFest International

Posted by Daphne Davis at 10:03 am

View of JohannesburgFor the first time ever, MegaFest, Bishop T.D. Jakes’ largest religious convention is going international! Previously held in Atlanta, this year’s MegaFest will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa. According to Bishop Jakes, the last MegaFest convention had a very global feel thanks to the presence of attendees from all over the world. That global feeling was the motivation behind the decision to have this year’s event outside the U.S.

The new venue, Johannesburg, is the largest city in South Africa and is known as Africa’s only global city. I visited South Africa and Johannesburg just over a year ago, and I would love to go back for this event! The 11 day conference will take place from October 6th-11th and will feature family focused activities including concerts, seminars, and guest speakers.

My husband and I during our tour of SowetoDuring the convention, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in excursions in and around Johannesburg. These excursions will include visiting sites such as Nelson Mandela’s home, the Apartheid museum, the Hector Pieterson Museum and even a lion park. These are sure to be exciting, educational and moving. I had the chance to visit all of these (except the lion park) during my trip last year, and my favorite part was the tour of Soweto and the Apartheid museum. Even though it was difficult to see and hear about all that happened during Apartheid, it was amazing to see the progress that has been made, which is so evident when you read the Bill of Rights that is part of South Africa’s new Constitution. It was also very inspiring and uplifting to hear about the trials and triumphs of many South African leaders like Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Rub-A-Dub-Dub Kits for The Salvation Army!

Posted by Daphne Davis at 3:00 pm

This month, the employees of Affinity4 began purchasing and bringing in toiletry items to donate to the local Salvation Army. Today we organized the items and made toiletry kits including shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothbrush & toothpaste, deodorant and other small items. Affinity4 hosted a reception for employees and a representative from the local branch of The Salvation Army. We presented the representative with the toiletry kits as well as monetary donations that we collected.

The kits we made will be given to men, women and children at the local shelter as part of The Salvation Army’s emergency services and homeless programs. These programs are available to many individuals and families, such as those who have lost their home in a fire or have become victims of a crisis situation. This activity was great for us as a team because it gave us the chance to help people right here in our community.

Learn how you can help The Salvation Army at http://www.salvationarmyusa.org!

History Repeats Itself

Posted by Matt Midgette at 10:12 am

It’s incredible from watching the new miniseries John Adams how nothing much has changed politically from over 200 years ago. George Washington, faced with a crucial international decision, made the best possible advised position. His leadership came under intense fire and he was burdened by the intense public opposition.

Sound familiar?

I remember hearing a phrase, ‘Heavy lies the crown’. How true it seems. Elected officials inaugurated to the cheers and fanfare and then exiting to scorn and anger. But I am glad to have the opportunity to elect and vote the best possible person into office. I don’t envy their position, but I respect the fact that no decision is easy and pray that it is for the greater of the country than the greater good of an individual.
